Golden Globes makes room for more animated feature nominees

Golden Globes makes room for more animated feature nomineesMore is always a good thing, at least when you're talking about awards.  That's the case for the animated feature film category for the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Nov. 17 that there will be five feature animated film nominees up for future awards, rather than the three from each year since the category was launched in 2006.According to The Hollywood Reporter, an HFPA representative said the group didn't know yet how many films would be submitted this year, but it will be more than 12. The HFPA's decision follows last week's word from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which said that since 20 pics have been submitted for the best feature film Oscar, as many as five may be nominated. While the Academy created its animated feature category in 2001, it has only had enough submissions to trigger five nominees once before. The 67th annual Golden Globes will be broadcast live on NBC on Jan. 17, hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Martin Scorsese to Receive Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille AwardFor my money, Martin Scorsese is one of the most influential filmmakers working in Hollywood today, and his films are nothing short of inspirational, provocative labors of love and life. It seems the Hollywood Foreign Press Association also agrees as Variety reports that he will be this year's recipient of  the Cecil B. DeMille Award recognizing a person's outstanding contribution to the entertainment field, which just last year was given to Scorsese's longtime friend, fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Scorsese will be honored by several of his peers and collaborators when the show (hosted by Ricky Gervais) airs live January 17th.

Comedy movie's cast boosted by Golden Globe winning actress Sally Hawkins

November 6, 2009 |11:03 | Gossips  By : Team X

GOLDEN Globe winner Sally Hawkins has joined the cast of comedy film Submarine, which is currently shooting in the city. The 33-year-old actress scooped the Best Actress gong for a musical or comedy film for her role in Happy Go Lucky at the awards earlier this year. She will join Bourne Ultimatum star Paddy Considine in a leading role on Submarine. Filming began in the city at the end of last month and is set to continue at locations across Swansea for around seven weeks, with Richard Ayoade as director.

Teen actress Yasmin Paige, best known for her role as Maria in Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, has been cast in the role of Jordana. And newcomer Craig Roberts has bagged the leading role of Oliver Tate, the 15-year-old boy around whom the plot revolves. The film is based on a novel by Swansea-born author Joe Dunthorne and is due for release at cinemas next year. Noah Taylor, who has starred in flicks such as Shine and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, has replaced Michael Sheen on the project.

It's no joke Gervais to host Golden Globes

November 3, 2009 |12:11 | Gossips  By : Team X

January's Golden Globe awards just got funnier, because comic genius and perpetual scene-stealer Ricky Gervais has agreed to host. Gervais, who typically gets the biggest laughs as a presenter on major awards shows every season, has resisted offers to host other ceremonies in the past. But "there are just some things you don't turn down," he said. The Globes are a good fit for Gervais, since the crowd tends to be a bit more raucous.

At last year's Globes, he cracked a joke about best supporting actress winner Kate Winslet, who won for her role in The Reader. "What did I tell you, Winslet? Do a Holocaust movie, win an award," he said onstage. "That's the trouble with Holocaust films: There's no gag reel on the DVD." This will be the first time the Globes has had a host since 1995. The awards show will be broadcast live on NBC Jan. 17. Nominations will be announced Dec. 15.
