Golden Globe Noms Shine Light On Worthy Programs

December 30, 2009 |10:14 | Gossips  By : Team X

Golden Globe Noms Shine Light On Worthy ProgramsThe Golden Globe nominations were released last week. As usual, many of the television categories were dominated with long-running programs. However, a few new shows received welcome nominations, a boost that could lend more credibility to these freshmen programs.

“Glee” was one of the new major nominees for the Globes, earning a nomination in the “Best Television Series: Musical or Comedy” category.  As I noted in a review of the program, “Glee”  revolves around a high school glee club.  Even though the show has stumbled a bit throughout this season, it has still emerged as as a entertaining and worthy hit. I was glad it got some attention from the Globes. The most obvious nomination for the program went to Jane Lynch, whose role as cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester is one of the highlights of the program. Other nominations for the show went to Matthew Morrison, who plays the glee coach, Will Schuester, and Lea Michele, who plays the overzealous singer Rachel.

Oscar Duel: Yes, They're Fun, But Do Golden Globes Influence Oscar?

December 22, 2009 |10:07 | Gossips  By : Team X

Oscar Duel: Yes, They're Fun, But Do Golden Globes Influence Oscar? In this ongoing blog duel, Moviefone‘s resident Oscarologist Jack Mathews and I discuss the impact of the Golden Globes on the Oscar race. On Golden Globes nominations morning, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Robert Downey, Jr., Julia Roberts and Tobey Maguire were dancing on the ceiling. And Harvey Weinstein thought he had three sure-fire Oscar contenders with Nine, Inglourious Basterds and A Single Man.

But in the sober light of day, as other critics groups and the Screen Actors Guild have weighed in and serious Oscar balloting gets under way, do the Golden Globes really matter? What is their influence in the big show that counts, the Oscar race?

JM—Don’t you just hate to see people dancing on the ceiling over Golden Globe nominations? Where’s their pride? Anyway, the dance for those stars is over for this year and Harvey Weinstein is lucky that the Academy expanded the Best Picture ballot from 5 to 10. He’ll get at least one of those spots for Inglourious Basterds, but A Single Man is a longshot for Best Picture and the reviews for Nine can be summed up as ‘Nein.

Anna Kendrick Talks About Golden Globe Nomination

December 21, 2009 |10:12 | Gossips  By : Team X

Anna Kendrick Talks About Golden Globe NominationAnna Kendrick must be flying high right about now. After all, she was in the highest-grossing movie of the year and has taken away a Golden Globe nomination for Up In the Air. The only thing that could be better? Winning the award, of course. But Anna's a little bit nervous about all the awards shows.

24-year-old Anna Kendrick has had a fabulous year. But it's not quite over yet. Next up? The Golden Globes show. She's, of course, excited, but also a little nervous. Anna says, "I always feel like someone's going to catch me in some gorgeous gown, but they'll realize that I'm the girl who usually wears Converse and then kick me out of the party." Uhh I doubt it! I have a feeling Anna's going to fit in just fine in a gown.

She says she's really excited about all of her co-stars who were nominated for Golden Globes and that she emailed co-star Vera Farmiga after the nominations were announced: "I was like, 'Best Golden Globes table ever? I think so!' I can't believe everybody's nominated. It's going to be the best party."

Of course, I can't even imagine what it's like to get a Golden Globe nomination, but I can imagine the excitement Anna is feeling. She says even Kristen Stewart texted her after the nominations! According to Anna, "Kristen [Stewart] sent me a text... She sent me a really, really sweet text."

We wish Anna Kendrick lots of luck and the Golden Globes! And congratulate her on her Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, too. And I can't wait to see what she's wearing to the awards show!

Recession-era film leads Golden Globe nominees

December 19, 2009 |11:30 | Gossips  By : Team X

The Academy Awards won't be handed out for more than two months and there will be nine other movies competing for the best picture Oscar, but it's increasingly clear that there's now a film to beat - the downsizing drama "Up in the Air."

Voters for the 67th annual Golden Globe awards gave writer-director Jason Reitman's movie, about an employment executioner who discovers he might be as expendable as the people he fires, a leading six nominations.

Two years ago, director Jason Reitman's "Juno" was the consummate Oscar underdog. An independent film without A-list stars, it went on to earn four Oscar nominations, winning best screenplay for Diablo Cody.
